Muteferriqa
With Muteferriqa is a research portal for printed Ottoman Turkish documents. Published by Miletos shall Muteferriqa serve to simplify access . The aim is to offer an insight into the research of historical documents from the last Ottoman century and the beginnings of the Republic and to open up new avenues in Ottoman studies.
Muteferriqa combines historical content with the advantages of a modern search engine, which can make research easier and faster. It enables a full-text search within seconds in millions of pages of its corpus, which includes practically all books and most of the periodicals ever printed in Ottoman Turkish. The refinement of search queries through rich and extensive metadata provides relevant cross-sections of the material.
Our specialised information service had a test phase for this product until 30 April 2023 for our subject-specific circle of users agreed.
Muteferriqa offers you the following functions:
- Full-text search in millions of pages of Ottoman-Turkish printed books and periodicals
- Advanced search to combine metadata queries and full-text queries with logical operators
- Wildcard search, in which special characters stand for any character, e.g. to find words with suffixes
- Fuzzy search, where some characters may not match, e.g. to find spelling variants for foreign names
- Proximity search to find several words within a certain distance of each other, possibly in the same sentence or paragraph
- Discover similar imagery through recommendations based on visual content
- Discover similar titles with content-based recommendations
- Discover search terms that may lead you to what you are looking for with automatic search suggestions
- Keep track of your searches with bookmarks and saved searches
- Navigate effortlessly through the titles with the help of Muteferriqa's comprehensive index pages
- Use the customised virtual keyboard to enter your search queries in Arabic script and to use the advanced functions such as the proximity search
- Faceted search to filter search results by metadata

Access was available to members of the institutions of our user group available until 31 March 2023. Authentication is carried out using the IP numbers of the respective network.
