FAQs on publishing on MENAdoc

What does secondary publication mean?

Green Open Access refers to the secondary publication of a publication that was initially published by a publisher and is later made available as a secondary publication in Open Access. This process is also known as self-archiving. Publications are archived on a document server and made freely accessible.
The option of secondary publication is regulated by law, including §38 of the Copyright Act. ‘The author of a scientific contribution […] has the right, if he or she has granted the publisher or editor an exclusive right of use, to make the contribution available to the public upon expiry of 12 months after first publication in the accepted manuscript version, unless this serves a commercial purpose.’ In addition, each author is free to ask their publisher for approval for digital secondary publication.

Secondary publication in Open Access can generally be associated with these advantages for you:

  • Greater visibility & availability of own research
  • Enhance your own reputation
  • Higher citation rates
  • Improved scientific communication
  • Contribution to the democratisation of science

Of course, every scientist is free to republish their own contributions on other repositories or websites.

MENAdoc offers these special features:

  • Creation of personalised bibliographies on a separate author page (example of a personalised bibliography)
  • Free service
  • Long-term availability & stable citation via DOI and URN
  • Professional creation of a catalogue with high-quality metadata
  • Support for a non-commercial platform as a contribution to the democratisation of publishing
  • MENAdoc as part of an evolving technical infrastructure of the University and State Library of Saxony-Anhalt
  • Granting CC licences: clear identification of legal terms of use for readers
  • Fulfilment of funding guidelines with regard to OA
  • Publisher's version: final version in publisher's layout
  • Postprint version: Version after peer review without publisher layout

It is important that authors always check the publication agreements to ensure that a secondary publication is permitted under Green Open Access. We are happy to support you with this.
