Slovo Kyrgyzstana Digital Archive

Today's newspaper "Slovo Kyrgyzstana" was founded on 23 March 1925 under the title "Batratskaja Pravda" (or "Batratskaia Pravda"), was published in Bishkek and functioned as the press organ of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Kyrgyzstan until 1991.

About the archive

Over time, the Russian-language newspaper changed its title several times, first to "Krest'janskij put'" (or "Krest'ianskii put'", 1925-1927) and then to "Sovetskaja Kirgizija" (or "Sovetskaia Kirgiziia", 1927-1991). In 1961, the medium was awarded the Soviet "Order of the Red Banner of Labour", the third highest decoration in the Soviet Union. The daily circulation reached 132,000 copies in 1975.

With the end of the Soviet Union and the political independence of Kyrgyzstan, the newspaper has been published since 1991 under the name "Slovo Kyrgyzstana" ("Word of Kyrgyzstan").

During this time, it noticeably lost its significance for the entire former Soviet Union. In the 2000s, the medium had a drastically reduced circulation of around 6,000 copies.
