Cumhuriyet

The digital archive of Turkey's most influential daily newspaper includes all available issues from 1924-1929 in Ottoman and from 1930-2020 in Turkish.

About the archive

Contents

Founded in May 1924, Cumhuriyet ("The Republic") is the oldest secular Turkish daily newspaper and is widely regarded as one of the last remaining opposition newspapers in Turkey. Founded by the journalist Yunus Nadi Abalıoğlu on the initiative of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, Cumhuriyet was the first newspaper of the Turkish Republic and promoted the belief in democracy, secularism and the rule of law.

The newspaper has a daily circulation of over 30,000 copies and attracts around 25 million visitors to its website every month. It is one of the most influential newspapers in Turkey and is recognised by readers at home and abroad as a reliable source of impartial, intelligent news reporting.

Character recognition

The full text of the archive was obtained by digital character recognition (OCR). Some are based on microfilms and may therefore be less accurate. In addition, Ottoman is considered a particularly difficult language for text recognition due to its characters. The newer Turkish editions were available in higher quality and therefore have more correct full texts.

Text and data mining

The provider protects the stability of its platform against mass automated downloads. Methods such as text and data mining could be recognised as such.

Please contact the Specialised Information Service in advance if you would like to use automated procedures for your research.
