Russian Islamic Studies

The "Universal Database of Russian Islamic Studies" offers access to current Russian newspapers and academic journals on Islam. The service is available free of charge throughout Germany and at German institutes abroad via the national licence system.

Russia and Islam

Just over ten per cent of the Russian population profess Islam, making Muslims the second largest population group in Russia after Orthodox Christians. Accordingly, there is also a lively media and research landscape in Russia with various newspapers and specialised journals on Islam and Islamic life in Russia.

A selection of ten particularly important periodicals is available via the "Universal Database of Russian Islamic Studies" is available free of charge throughout Germany. The database was jointly developed by the specialised information services Eastern, Central Eastern and South Eastern Europe and Middle Eastern, North African and Islamic Studies with the support of the German Research Foundation.

This gives researchers working on Muslims and Islam in Russia, the Caucasus and Central Asia easy access to the latest academic publications and journalistic news, which were previously difficult to access in Germany, via a convenient web portal. The database of the company "East View Information Services" dates back in part to 2007 and is continually being expanded to include the latest articles.

Magazines included

"Islam in the modern world" is a quarterly journal on Islamic studies in Russia, the CIS, Europe and the Middle East. Topics include Islamophobia, Muslim organisations worldwide, the "Arab Spring" and integration issues.

"Islamic Studies" is the first publication in the Russian Federation to offer theoretical reflections on Islam. The quarterly journal covers a wide range of topics, including history, politics, sociology, philosophy and law in Islam.

The quarterly magazine "Minaret of Islam" is published by the well-known Russian-Tatar cleric Damir Mukhetdinov. With 10,000 copies, it is a widely distributed specialised journal for Islamic scholars. The authors include leading Islamic scholars, Russian political and religious figures and foreign experts.

The magazine "Islam in the states of the Commonwealth of Independent States" is dedicated to international relations, political science, religious studies, sociology, history, cultural studies, philology, economics and finance, Islamic studies or law with a geographical focus on Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

"As-Salam" is a newspaper of the Association of Muslims in Dagestan.

"Islamskii vestnik" is a newspaper from Makhachkala in Dagestan.

"Medina al'-Islam" a monthly magazine with a circulation of 30,000 copies published by the well-known Russian publishing house MEDINA.

"Minbar Islama" a monthly magazine with a circulation of 10,000 copies, edited by Damir Khairetdinov, also published by MEDINA.

"Poslanie / Riselet" a monthly magazine with a Russian, Bashkir and Tatar focus, published in Ufa.

"Zori Islama" a newspaper from Grozny, published by the Chechen Ministry of National Policy, Foreign Relations, Press and Information.

Access and help

Members of a university can usually use an existing institutional login. This procedure enables easy access at German universities, research institutions and academic libraries without a special login. If your computer is not located in the campus area of your home institution, you should enquire locally about other access options (e.g. local login via VPN).

 

Interested parties without access via a home institution can register for a private accountif you have your permanent residence in Germany. Once you have registered, you will receive your personal access data by post shortly afterwards.
