150 manuscripts make up the collection of Rafi' Shamghudi (1863-1932), a famous scholar and book lover from Shangoda in central Dagestan, which consists of texts in Arabic and Persian and also includes copies from the Timurid period.
The Middle Eastern Manuscripts Online 4 comprise 150 manuscripts and a small number of printed works. They form the collection of Rafi' Shamghudi (1863-1932), a famous scholar and book lover from Shangoda, a city in central Dagestan. The private collection was amassed by several generations of scholars from the Shamghudi family. Rafi' Shamghudi inherited it and added further texts while travelling to Mecca, Yemen and Egypt. When rumours of Shamghudi's arrest reached his hometown, the scholars decided to hide the library in the basement of the local Friday mosque. The library remained hidden throughout the Soviet era and was only recovered in July 2001. The collection, with texts in Arabic and Persian, also contains copies from the Timurid period.
